Cord blood banking is a relatively new concept. It is only in the last ten years that parents have seriously begun to bank their baby’s cord blood.
While the practice of banking cord blood is still not common it is becoming more popular as people begin to learn about its benefits.
Cord blood is the blood that remains in umbilical cord after a live birth. Currently the umbilical cord along with the placenta and associated blood are all discarded after birth. Cord blood stem cells have more extensive uses than bone marrow stem cells and do not face the controversy that is associated with embryonic stem cell research.
Cord blood stem cells can develop into various types of cells such as muscle, nerve or blood cells. Since these cells can regenerate immune system and repair damaged cells, they have the potential to treat heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease.
Cord blood may indeed be the way of the future. Currently, it can treat more than 75 diseases, immune deficiencies and other conditions. It is effective for treatment of certain types of cancer, blood disorders and auto-immune diseases. The cord blood can be used not only by your child, but also other family members.
In recent stem cell breakthroughs, researchers were able to develop bone and cartilage, and grow mini liver and lung cells from cord blood stem cells. These cells can potentially be transplanted into the body to repair damaged organs, thus overcoming the severe shortages of organ donors. Researches are hopeful that cord blood stem cell transplant can regenerate into organs inside or outside the body and saves many lives. There is less chance of the body rejecting the new organ regenerated from your own cord blood.
There are 2 types of cord blood banks: private and public. If you want to bank your baby’s cord blood for use by your child or other family members, then you should choose a private cord blood bank. However, private cord blood banking can be costly as you have to pay for the cord blood collection process and annual storage fees. There are cases you should consider storing cord blood privately. Parents of children of ethnic minorities are encouraged to bank their baby’s cord blood as it is difficult to find bone marrow match. Private cord blood banking is also recommended where there’s a family history to diseases only treatable with cord blood.
Cord blood stored in a public bank can be used by anyone who needs it.
If you decide to bank your newborn’s cord blood, you will need to choose a cord blood bank ahead of the birth, typically at least a month or two before the due date. Once you fill out the paperwork and inform your doctor and hospital about the decision. Many hospitals are not equipped to handle this immediate cord blood collection at the birth and special arrangements may need to be made. The cord blood will be collected and returned to the bank of your choice to be stored for later use if needed.

0 CommentsIf you use cosmetics, and lets face it we all do at least once a day in our basic hygiene and grooming, you would know that most cosmetics today are getting way too pricey.
It may seem the better the product the bigger the price tag.
Have you ever asked yourself “what’s in them and what am I actually paying for?” Is it the way your favorite soap mascara, or shampoo is packaged or is there a ground breaking secret ingredient contained in the formula that the manufacturer is promising will perform miracles (think anti aging creams)?
Either way I can bet it doesn’t cost the the manufacturer a bundle to produce the product but we do pay for it at the check out counter its called profit!
However, in saying that most cosmetics are made from crude oil refining by products and are sold in large volumes based on daily crude oil market rates. So naturally the large crude oil companies have a vested interest in the worlds cosmetics market! I can guarantee you that most cosmetics are made up of oil by products in them.
For instance, sodium laureth sulphate is very commonly used in your basic household cosmetics. Did you know sodium laureth sulphate is a detergent and surfactant (are wetting agents that lower the surface tension of a liquid, allowing easier spreading) found in many personal care products (soaps, shampoos toothpaste etc.)?
It is an inexpensive and very effective foamer that’s why the manufacturers use it. We humans like to see lots of suds when we wash as we associate it with being clean! Its also a cultural thing remember being washed head to toe with velvet soap by grandma? What you may not know is that sodium laureth sulphate is listed in the chemical world as a “known irritant “it can also CAUSE irritation after extended exposure.
In other words, if you weren’t allergic to a product containing it after a period of use its highly likely you will be. Products containing sodium laureth sulphate can affect people who are prone to eczema and other irritants.
These substances provide a foaming quality to the cosmetic product, allowing for better distribution of the product while bathing whether it be washing hair or skin or even whilst brushing your teeth. When rinsed off, the sodium laureth sulphate will have cleaned the area but will have stripped it of moisture from the top layers of skin.
In people with sensitive skin (prone to dermatitis, acne, eczema, psoriasis and chemical sensitivity), the drying property of sodium laureth sulphate and these type of detergents can cause flare-ups of skin conditions or may worsen existing conditions.
The key to checking out cosmetic labels is this.
The first 5 listed ingredients are what the product is mainly made up of. With the first listed ingredient as the main component the second as runner up and so on and so forth.
So take my advice, check out the list of ingredients on the back of the cosmetics you buy in the supermarket BEFORE you get to the check out counter.
Do it for yourself but more importantly for your families. There just may be an ingredient listed that is causing skin irritations or sensitivities that you never thought of .

0 CommentsAddictions are a worldwide phenomenon adversely affecting the lives of millions across all geographical boundaries and cultures. At a personal level, people’s lives are destroyed by their addictions and their loved ones also suffer the trauma from the negative ripple effect.
Causes of addictive behaviors according to modern science
There is no consensus as to the etiology, prevention and treatment of addictive disorders. Many people consider addictions as ‘diseases,’ but others consider addictions to be behaviors learned in response to the complex interplay between heredity and environmental factors. Still others argue in favour of a genetic cause. This lack of agreement among experts causes problems with prevention and treatment of much addictive behaviour.
Root cause for addiction according to spiritual research
Spiritual research has documented that 96% of the causes of addiction are spiritual in origin and only 4% of addictions are initiated due to non-spiritual causes in the person itself such as a person’s intense liking for a certain substance or psychological reasons such as tension, anxiety, depression etc.
The spiritual causes of addiction include:
1. Possession by ghosts (30%)
2. Possession by subtle bodies of departed ancestors (70%)
The reasons behind possession:
1. The possession by ghosts or ancestors is mainly to satisfy their own craving for the addictive substance and/or to trouble the person by making him an addict.
2. Ghosts possess anyone with a mental weakness or vulnerability. The person does not necessarily have to be their descendent
3. The ancestors possess because of the give-and-take account and the karmic http://www.spiritualresearchfoundation.org/spiritualresearch/spiritualscience/lawofkarma/index.php bond between them and their descendent which is a subtle (intangible) doorway that they exploit to possess their descendents and satisfy their cravings through them
Suggested principles in the treatment of addiction obtained through spiritual research
The principle behind any spiritual treatment is to instigate an increase in the basic subtle sattva component in the person along with a concomitant decrease in the subtle basic tama component by doing spiritual practice that conforms to the five basic principles of spiritual practice, done regularly and increased from time to time at a quantitative and qualitative level.
The 3-step Spiritual treatment program for overcoming addictions, recommended by SSRF
1. Repeating the protective chant of ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vaasudevaaya’ for a minimum of 2.5 hours or 972 repetitions daily.
2. Repeating the protective chant of ‘Sree Gurudev Datta’ for a minimum of 1.5 hours or 972 repetitions daily.
3. Salt Water treatment for 15 minutes daily (by placing the feet in a bucket filled with water, add 2 spoons of rock salt to the water)
This can be followed up with reducing the intake of the addictive substance or thing in a phased manner along with any medical treatment that has been prescribed by one’s doctor or psychiatrist.
The highlights and benefits of spiritual healing treatment of addiction:
• Minimal cost – cost is mainly in terms of time invested and regularity of effort and for rock salt
• Very low incidence of withdrawal symptoms
• The spiritual practice increases the tolerance due to increase in sattvikta in the person
• Increases our spiritual energy and defense systems against the ghost/departed ancestor thus the person is able to give up the addictive habit immediately
• It works both as a treatment to cure addictions and as a preventive mechanism and it takes care of addiction formation as well as relapse too.
• The parents can take these 3 steps as a preventive measure while planning to have a baby. Bringing up the child in as sattvik an environment as possible and introducing the child to spiritual practice since early childhood will also help as a preventive measure.
• As a preventive measure for people who are not currently addicted
The factors critical for success are
1. Regularity in spiritual practice of the 3 step spiritual treatment
2. An intense desire to quit addiction
3. Strong willpower to do so
4. Faith in a Higher Power and spiritual practice helps to accelerate the healing process.
Bottom line
Spiritual research on addiction shows that the spiritual dimension has a monopoly on the root causes of addiction and without taking the spiritual dimension into account, people trying to assist in rehabilitation of addicts can only have limited success.

0 CommentsFor many of us, the average morning is akin to being an extra in a zombie movie. Millions of people stumble to work each day with stiff muscles, bleary eyes, and heavy breathing, all punctuated by low, repeating moans.
“Coffeeeeee…”
Once you get that first cup of coffee, the dull-grey world explodes into brilliant color (think office cubicles housing three Bollywood musicals at once) and we become Superman. Alert! Active! Blessedly awake! Unfortunately, a few ticks of the hour hand later we’re once again the Living Dead. The chair’s pushed back, the coffee pot is hit, and the cycle repeats itself.
Way too much of a good thing?
Caffeine, though something of a wonder drug, is getting abused. Taken in moderation, particularly in things like dark chocolate or black coffee, it can have health benefits. ‘Moderation,’ however, becomes an unfamiliar concept when you’re drinking a dozen cups of coffee a day. High blood pressure, anxiety, increased risk for cardiovascular disease, and increased risk of ulcers are a few of the problems associated with overconsumption.
The problem is, we need our caffeine; two thirds of Americans simply don’t get enough sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation. For many, coffee won’t cut it, leading to increased consumption of energy drinks like Red Bull or the charmingly-named Cocaine. And the stuff is showing up where you’d least expect it: mints, chewing gum, donuts.
But there are plenty of strategies you can use to remain energized while avoiding excessive caffeine. It takes a little more effort than buying that mocha or opening that Coke, but you’re guaranteed to feel better than ever before.
Eat breakfast.
Yes, it’s a cliché, but breakfast remains the most important part of your day. Not only will a proper meal in the A.M. (not a chocolate bar and some soda pop) energize you for hours, it’ll help you keep your weight down-the body uses nutrients less efficiently when it wakes up, meaning you’ll retain fewer unneeded calories by having that food earlier in the day.
Ideal breakfast foods include oatmeal, high-fiber cereals, veggies, and whole-wheat toast. Because they contain so much fiber, it takes you longer to process the sugars inside, meaning your body gets a slow, steady flow of energy instead of one tidal wave. One massive jolt of caffeine will pep you up, sure, but once it wears off you’re left worse than when you started.
Eat when you’re hungry.
Three square meals a day may be neater on a schedule, but it sure ain’t healthier. Don’t be afraid of snacking between meals! Doing this maintains a reasonable amount of energy all day long. As an added bonus, you may lose some weight; counterintuitive as that sounds, spreading out your caloric intake means you’re less likely to overeat during “big” meals.
Bear in mind, this does not mean you should be munching down potato chips and cookies! What you snack on is just as important as the snacking itself.
Good snacks:
Fruit is loaded with energizing fructose, as well as healthy fiber and plenty of antioxidants. An apple with some peanut butter or a cool bunch of grapes can quickly take the place of that midday candy bar, and a yogurt-based fruit smoothie makes a great replacement for your three cans of soda.
Almonds and other nuts are superb snacks as well-they’re filling, crunchy, and bursting with omega-3 (that’s the fat we actually should eat). Yogurt and other low-fat dairy foods, too, provide much needed energy along with nutrients necessary to maintain your metabolism and keep your body healthy.
Eat these foods throughout the day, never overeating (gorging yourself leads to fatigue, like when you nod off at Thanksgiving). In addition, consider foods high in iron like steak once or twice a week; iron is important for energy, too. It’s okay to drink a cup or two of coffee along with all this, but if you find yourself downing seven hugelarge cups of espresso each day: cut back. And finally, most importantly…
Sleep.
Even with new wonder-drugs like Modafinil-which can keep a person up for 40 hours straight with no side-effects-sleep experts reiterate there is no substitute for a full night’s rest. The brain needs it, the body needs it, your very soul needs it. We aren’t machines; no matter what we put into our bodies to keep them running, if we don’t have sleep to go along with it we’ll eventually pay dearly.
So next time you reach for your coffee mug, consider having some fruit instead-and get some sleep once you get home from work!

When you suffer from eczema or psoriasis, your skin cracks, thus presenting you with painful slits or fissures. They cause agony even while doing simple movements.
Your skin cracks and it can give you a terrible pain. The hands and feet are the most vulnerable spots for this problem. But other spots like the mouth, lips, cheeks etc. too can be affected. Usually, the areas between toes and on the heels are affected. These fissures, if neglected, can cause infection. Generally, women who wear open-backed heels and slides are affected.
Treatment for the cracked skin:
• Soak yourself: The best treatment for dry skin is to have a good bath every night before going to sleep. This enables your skin cells to absorb water, since these cells are like sponge. You can also soak the affected body part for about 20 minutes in warm water and then pat dry.
• Apply petroleum products: Once you are through with your bath, apply a coating of petroleum jelly product. Then put on a pair of socks for your feet or a pair of light cotton gloves for your hands to seal the moisture. These petroleum products work far better than commercial moisturizers, since they do not have the same sealing effects.
• Stick the cracks: You can apply glue to ease the pain caused by the fissures. This takes the air out of the nerve endings and thus sticks the slits. This procedure is completely safe for slits and minor cuts. However, avoid using this method on deep wounds.
• Avoid tartar toothpaste: If you suffer from cracked lips, minimize your usage of tartar toothpaste. This toothpaste contains compounds that irritate the mucuous membranes and other sensitive tissues. These toothpastes leave the skin cracked and cause a rash which itches around the mouth.
Following some of the above mentioned steps can help you in preventing/curing cracked skin.

0 CommentsIt is very natural for a person to loss 50 to 100 hairs each day under the body’s hair renewal process. But most of the people at least once in their lifetime suffer with heavy hair loss.
There may be various reason behind this; like medication, chemotherapy, exposure to radiations and certain chemicals, nutritional and hormonal factors, thyroid disease, skin disease or stress, etc.
In most of the cases hair loss is temporary but in certain cases it may be permanent depending on the severity of disease. Some of the most common causes of hair loss are explained here.
HORMONAL
Hormones are stimulant to hair growth and causes hair loss problems. Hormones affect heavily our hair growth. These affect both male as well as female hair health.
Hair thinning is one of the hormonal problems and affects both men and women. Hair thinning in male is specific and follows a pattern from the front through to the crown. Hair thinning in female does not follow any specific pattern.
Hair thinning is caused by androgen DHT or Dihydrotesterone. Everyone has DHT but only some suffers with hair problem, are you wandering, why? This owes to the hair follicles, which have a greater number of androgen receptors for the DHT to attach with. Till date the most effective treatment for the problems of hair thinning is; anti androgens. Anti androgens are preventive drugs that prevent the creation of DHT. In future we may get genes therapy for hair thinning problems.
Childbirth
Many of the females experience hair loss after labor. In such a situation many of the hair enters the telogen or resting phase. Some of the females experiences hair loss within two to three months after giving childbirth.
Hair problem due to pregnancy is temporary and in many of the cases eradicate within time, say 1 to 6 months. This occurs because of diverse hormonal changes that take place within the body during pregnancy.
Birth control pills
The females who are genetically programmed with Androgenic Alopecia, if takes birth control pills at much younger age encounters hair loss. Androgenic Alopecia is caused due to various hormonal changes.
The females who have history of hair loss in their family must consult doctor before taking any birth control pills. This type of hair loss is temporary and may stop in 1 to 6 months. But in some of the cases, it has been noticed that a female cannot regrow some of her hair that was lost due to Androgenic Alopecia.
Deficient diet
A good balanced diet rich in varied variety of nutrients is equally important to your hair health. The person who eats less of proteins or has irregular eating habits suffers with hair loss. Generally to save protein our body pushes growing hair into resting phase. If your hair can be pulled out by the root very easily, then this may be due to lack of a well balanced diet. This condition can be prevailed by eating a diet rich in proteins and other necessary nutrients.
Low serum iron
If some person either may not have access to iron rich food or his / her body may not absorb enough of iron then this may cause hair problems. Women during menstrual period are more prone to be iron deficient. Low iron in the body can be detected by laboratory test and can be corrected by taking a diet rich in iron and iron pills.
Disease Or Illness
Hair loss due to some disease or illness is very common, but this type of hair loss is temporary and lost hair may grow again. Diseases like sever infection or flu and high fever, thyroid disease etc may lead to hair loss.
Certain medications, cancer treatments, and chronic illnesses also cause hair loss. A person who receives surgery also faces hair loss problems.
However, hair loss problems of any sort are generally temporary and can be solved by taking good nutritious diet and professional help.

0 CommentsSusan hates this time of year.
“I always lose a few pounds over the summer,” the 42-year-old mother and homemaker says. “But as soon as Halloween arrives, I gain the weight back, along with a few more pounds.
I start eating the kids’ treats and then the holidays arrive. Every January, I am fatter, more stressed out, and more tired than the year before. Even my skin suffers!”
From trick-or-treat candy to New Year’s cocktails, the next few months will be filled with culinary temptations. Is it possible to enjoy the holidays without packing on extra pounds? Dr. Roman Malkov says you can, if you follow some important guidelines. Dr. Malkov, who is renowned sports medicine specialist, has developed an eating and wellness plan based on the idea of carb cycling. This approach is very different than typical low-carb diets.
People who follow a carb cycling diet not only lose weight, they also often report an increase in lean muscles mass and higher levels of energy. This is important, because we can all use some extra energy during the hectic holidays. Dr. Malkov also says his program can make your skin look younger because the diet stimulates anabolism, which leads to fewer wrinkles. Carb cycling is not complicated and it doesn’t require you to buy any special supplements. You just need to learn some basic rules of how your body metabolism works.
As teenagers, many of us could eat just about anything we wanted during the holidays without gaining a pound. Then as we got older, it became harder to keep the scale from creeping upward. What changed? Our metabolism! As we age, our production of some vital hormones begins to drop and we often begin to process carbohydrates less efficiently. Still, it’s important to note everyone is genetically different. That’s why your friend may be able to stuff herself with mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie and stay lean while you may only lose weight by limiting you carbohydrate consumption.
In his book, The Carb Cycling Diet, Malkov explains there are two important bodily processes that determine how you look and feel - anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism is the process fueled by anabolic hormones that allows your body to build muscle and bones.
“As younger people, we produced a lot of important anabolic growth and sex hormones,” Dr. Malkov explains. “As we age, our bodies produce less of these hormones, which leads to a slowing down in metabolism, resulting in weight gain and health problems. ”
Catabolism is the process by which your body burns fat. Many popular diets, including most low-carb plans, focus only on catabolism, while completely ignoring the other, beneficial part - anabolism. Therefore, Dr. Malkov claims they do not help you to stay young longer, build muscle or help your body produce more anabolic hormones.
Dr. Malkov says, “It is important to realize that while catabolism destroys fat, it also destroys bone and proteins. Proteins are very important for your health. As we age, we begin losing proteins from muscle, cartilage, and skin. This leads to a decrease in bone and muscle mass, problems with our joints, and even wrinkles. If you want to stay young longer you need to take steps to prevent protein and bone loss.”
Dr. Malkov says he has helped many clients lose fat in healthy way, by kick-start their metabolism and increasing their natural production of anti-aging anabolic hormones. The first step is always to put his clients on a carb cycling diet.
Unlike other carb restriction plans that limit the number of calories and carbohydrates you can consume every day, carb cycling works on a rotating system. You alternate between lower carb days and higher carb days. According to Dr. Malkov, cycling allows you to burn fat at a faster pace during low carb days and then rebuild your carbohydrate stores on the alternating days. There are several benefits to this method of eating. Carb cycling helps prevent your metabolism from slowing down, which means you are less likely to hit the dreaded fat-loss plateau. Many people also find carb cycling easier to stick to than traditional low carb diets.
“It’s not realistic to tell people that they can never have a bite of Halloween candy,” says Malkov. “You simply have to be aware of the big picture when it comes to eating. If you indulge a little today, you need to counterbalance your diet tomorrow.”
Carb cycling has been successfully used by many fitness models and personal trainers. Dr. Malkov has also helped members of the Russian National Athletic Team use the system in order to drop fat, build muscle, and improve their performances. Additionally, there is increasing evidence that carb cycling can provide anti-aging benefits and even prevent some diseases, such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Malkov stresses that the days you pick for your low-carb and higher carb days are up to you. For instance, if you like to take a step aerobics class on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, you might want to make those days your higher carb days so you have the energy required for your workouts. During higher carb days, Dr. Malkov recommends eating between 350 to 400 grams of carbohydrates. That’s about what you probably are already eating. Keep in mind that you should focus on eating unrefined carbs from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. These carbs are packed with healthy compounds that help ward off disease and keep your body young. Limited refined carbs from sugar and processed white flour. This includes white bread, crackers, and all processed junk food.
On limited carb days, Dr. Malkov suggests not eating any foods containing sugar or white flour. That means no Halloween candy! Try to keep your carbs under 300 grams a day. He says you should never starve yourself or feel hungry, even on limited carb days. Try to eat plenty of small meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism from slowing down.
By now, you may be worried that carb cycling is complicated. Dr. Malkov says it’s actually pretty easy.
“Counting carbs becomes simple once you get the hang of it,” he explains. “I suggest picking up a carb counting book, like the ones used by diabetics. The small extra effort it takes to carb cycle can bring a huge payoff in terms of weight loss, increased energy and improved health.”
Just remember, carb cycling is not a license to eat as many calories as you want. The only way to shed fat is to eat fewer calories than your body needs to maintain your current weight. Still, Dr. Malkov wants women like Susan to understand that losing weight alone will not provide the healthy glow we all crave. If you want to improve your appearance and boost your energy as you drop pounds, you need to increase your body’s natural production of anti-aging anabolic hormones. You may find that you can produce the results you are looking for by starting a carb cycling program.

0 CommentsWhen you take care of the natural teeth in your mouth, there will be no toothache to crow about. Toothache refers to the pain caused by tooth or jaw problems such as dental cavity, a cracked tooth, an exposed tooth root, gum disease, disease of the jaw joint, or muscle spasms when chewing.
The severity of a toothache can range from mild to chronic excruciating pain. The pain may be aggravated by chewing, cold, or hot temperature of food or liquids taken through the mouth. Dental x-rays can help determine the cause whether the toothache is coming from a tooth or jaw problem.
It is possibility that a toothache may be caused by a problem not originating from a tooth or the jaw. Pain around the teeth and the jaws can be symptoms of diseases of the heart such as angina or heart attack, ear infections, and even a sinus infection. The pain of angina is usually located in the chest or the arm. However, in some patients with angina, a toothache or jaw pain are the only symptoms of their heart problem. Since infections and diseases of the ears and sinuses can also cause pain around the teeth and jaws, evaluations by both dentists and doctors become necessary to diagnose medical illnesses causing “toothache.”
Dental cavity is the most common cause of toothache. Dental cavities are holes in the two outer layers of a tooth called the enamel and the dentin. These layers serve to protect the inner lining of the tooth tissue called the pulp, where blood vessels and nerves reside. Bacterial infections in the mouth convert simple sugars into acid which softens and dissolves the enamel and dentin, thus, creating cavities. Small shallow cavities usually do not cause pain and may be unnoticed by the patient. It is the larger deeper cavity that becomes irritated by bacterial toxins when food debris collect causing toothache. Foods that are cold, hot, sour, or sweet can also cause pain.
Dental filling is usually the treatment for small and shallow cavities, while larger cavity involves an on-lay or crown. For cavities that have penetrated and injured the pulp, treatment requires either a root canal procedure or extraction of the affected tooth. Pulp injury can lead to the death of pulp tissue, resulting in tooth infection or dental abscess. The root canal procedure involves removing the dying pulp tissue and replacing it with an inert material to save the dying tooth from extraction.
Gum disease or gingivitis is considered to be the second most common cause of toothache characterized by the inflammation of the soft tissue and abnormal loss of bone that surrounds the teeth and holds them in place. This condition is caused by toxins secreted by bacteria in “plaque” that accumulate over time along the gum line. Gum bleeding without pain is an early symptom of this disease while pain is of more advanced gum disease symptom as the loss of bone around the teeth leads to the formation of gum pockets. Advanced gum disease can cause loss of otherwise healthy teeth.
Early gum disease is treatment involves oral hygiene and removal of bacterial plaque. Thorough cleaning of the teeth and teeth roots called “root planing” and “subgingival curettage.” Root planing is the removal of plaque and tartar from exposed teeth roots while subgingival curettage refers to the removal of the surface of the inflamed layer of gum tissue. Both of these procedures are usually performed under local anesthesia and may be accompanied by the use of oral antibiotics to overcome gum infection or abscess. Follow-up treatment may include various types of gum surgeries. In advanced gum disease with significant bone destruction and loosening of teeth, teeth splinting or teeth extractions may be necessary.

0 CommentsA bunion is a bony lump on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe. This may be an isolated problem, but it is often associated with other problems with the shape of the foot.
The most common cause of bunions is footwear that does not have enough width to fit the toes in their natural position. High heels are particularly to blame as they squash the toes into the narrowest part of the front of the shoe.
Bunions are more common in women than men, and a tendency to get them can run in families. They are occasionally associated with arthritis of the joint at the base of the big toe but many people with bunions have no underlying joint problems.
There are very few occasions where bunion surgery is the only option. The main alternative to surgery is to adapt your shoes so that they fit comfortably.
The options depend on how severe the bunion is. Using extra-wide-fitting shoes from a good- quality shoe shop may be enough. If not, the surgical appliances department at the hospital will be able to give you advice about stretching shoes or ordering a custom-made pair to fit the shape of your feet comfortably.
These shoes are not usually particularly fashionable, but they avoid all the risks of an operation and are almost always an effective treatment.
Bunions do not get better without surgery. Most bunions will get worse with time. Wearing sensible footwear will usually prevent them from getting rapidly worse. The skin over the bunion can become inflamed where it rubs on the inside of the shoe.
Very occasionally it can get infected and cause an ulcer. Aching in the foot is common but this is due to other related problems with how the foot works rather than the bunion itself.
A variety of anaesthetic techniques are possible. Your anaesthetist will discuss the options with you and will recommend the best form of anaesthesia for you.
There is a wide range of different operations for bunions, depending on the size of the bunion, the amount of deformity of the big toe, other associated problems with how the foot works, and any arthritis. The operation will involve removing the bunion.
It may involve other procedures to cut and realign the bones of the big toe and to tighten stretched ligaments around the big-toe joint. You may also need to have an operation to straighten one or more of the other toes at the same time.
Your surgeon will discuss with you how much surgery you will need. At the end of the operation, your surgeon will close the skin with stitches.
Bunions are very common. For those people who are not able to cope with adapting their footwear, surgery gives a good chance of making their feet fit comfortably into normal shoes and improving the cosmetic appearance.
Surgery is usually safe and effective. However, complications can happen. You need to know about them to help you make an informed decision about surgery. Knowing about them will also help to detect and treat any problems early.
